December 17, 2007 marks 100 years since the first king of the Wangchuck Dynasty His Majesty Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck ascended the throne.
In 1907,Bhutan was united for the first time under His Majesty Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck ,establishing the Wangchuk Dynasty.
To commemorate and to rejoice this happy occasion, a year-long event, lasting from December 17, 2007 till January 1,2009 will be organized.
The celebrations will highlight the last Himalayan Buddhist kingdom in the world. It will spotlight on the vibrant living Buddhist culture of the country. For the year-long celebration many unique cultural and traditional sports festivals, Royal heritage trails and treks related to the Bhutanese monarchy as well as opening of new hiking/trekking trails to places unopened to visitors until date will feature throughout the year long celebrations.
2008 presents a unique opportunity to sample and experience the magic that is Bhutan.
